The Aftokinitodromos 64 / Αυτοκινητόδρομος 64 ( Greek for 'Motorway 64'), also περιφεριακή Υμήττου / Hymettos - or Ymittos Ring , is a Greek motorway and a branch of the Attiki Odos (Motorway 6; European Road 94 ) in the east of Athens and leads to 94 from the west side of Mount Ymittos (or Hymettos) around its north side to the east towards Marathon and Rafina .

The entire stretch of Autobahn 64, like that of Attiki Odos, is subject to a toll .

history

Construction of the existing section from the Katechaki motorway triangle to the Agios Gerasimos junction began on September 19, 1997. The section was handed over to traffic on August 4, 2000. From March 19, 2001, the motorway became subject to tolls. The automatic toll system was introduced on January 31, 2003. Since the construction took place together with the construction of the Attiki Odos, the costs of this motorway section were included in the entire project. The cost of the entire project was 1.3 billion euros . 65% of this sum was borne by the Greek state and 35% by the operator Attiki Odos SA.

Planning

Since 2005 there have been plans to expand the entire Attiki Odos project consisting of three motorways (A6, A62, A64) by 76 km to 141 km. The A64 is to be expanded at both ends. The planning phase for these two projects started in mid-2008.

To the east, the A64 is to be extended to Rafina and Marathon to the Pikermi junction . This upgraded line would run to the north of Athens Airport and would be around six kilometers long.

At the same time, further construction at the western end is being planned. This section would run south along the Hymetto towards Vouliagmeni and Glyfada. The expansion is technically difficult, however, as only a construction on the mountain slope would be possible without extensive demolition of the dense residential development. On the other hand, another variant involves the construction of a total of seven tunnels with a total length of 9.28 kilometers.
