Ilioupoli ( Greek Ηλιούπολη ( f. Sg. ) 'Sun City') is a municipality with almost 80,000 inhabitants on the southeastern outskirts of the Greek capital Athens .

geography

Ilioupoli is located on the southwestern foothills of the Ymittos at an average of 150 meters above sea level, its center is around 5 kilometers southeast of the Acropolis . About half of the community area in the west is built on; the eastern half is forested and rises to 650  m to the ridge of the Ymittos, here the Koropis area borders the city. To the north, west and south the area merges seamlessly into that of the other districts of the capital, these are the communities of Vyronas and Dafni-Ymittos in the north , Agios Dimitrios and Alimos to the east and Elliniko-Argyroupoli in the south. In the northwest the Pikdrofafni brook crosses the municipality, further south from the Ymittos brooks are dotted or buried. The coast of the Saronic Gulf is around 2.5 kilometers from the southern edge of the municipality in the southwest.

City structure

Ilioupoli is officially divided into eleven districts:

  • Agia Marina (Αγία Μαρίνα)
  • Agia Mavra (Αγία Μαύρα)
  • Agia Paraskevi (Αγία Παρασκευή)
  • Agios Konstandinos (Άγιος Κωνσταντίνος)
  • Ano Ilioupoli (Άνω Ηλιούπολη)
  • Astynomica panorama (Αστυνομικά-Πανόραμα)
  • Kato Ilioupoli (Κάτω Ηλιούπολη)
  • Center (Κέντρο)
  • Nisaki (Νησάκι)
  • Typographics (Τυπογραφικά)
  • Chalikaki (Χαλικάκι)

In addition, there are also many traditionally designated districts or neighborhoods, including Mamai (Μαμάη), Sykies (Συκιές), Proedrika (Προεδρικά), Kithara (Κιθάρα) and Germanika (Γερμανικά). A small area in Ano Ilioupoli is called Lofos Germanou ('Hill of the German', after a property owned by a German before World War II).

history

In ancient times, the area of Ilioupolis was in the area of the Demos Euōnymon ( ancient Greek Εὐώνυμον ), one of the ten Demoi of Athens, who was named after a mythical son Euonymos of Uranus and Gaia . Ancient Greek Euōnymos means ' spindle bush '. Excavations in the municipal area show settlement in the Mycenaean and Classical times.

In the Ottoman period, the central area of the later municipality belonged to the Çiftlik Kara, which was named after its landowner Mustafa Kara Ali. It appears in 1890 under the name Karas (Καρᾶς) as a 'small village' with 94 inhabitants in the lists of places in Greece by Ioannis Nouchakis. At that time there was already a small church in Kara, which was dedicated to St. Nicholas and was only replaced by a new building in 1966. The Çiftlik's possession of four hoofs of plow land (Greek unit zevgari, eigtl. ' Team ', about 8 ha) came into Greek hands in 1832 through a purchase contract. Subsequently, the estate changed hands several times, in 1922 an Alexios Nastos proclaimed a huge area as his property, which comprised almost the entire municipality including the slope on the Ymittos and parts of the adjacent areas of Alimos and Argyroupoli. (Even in 2014 there was a legal dispute over land ownership between the heirs Nastos' and the three communities.) A 103 hectare site acquired in 1922, the Greek Association of urban and rural settlements - Drandakis, Pangalos & Co. (Ελληνική Εταιρία Αστικών και Αγροτικών Συνοικισμών - Δρανδάκης , Πάγκαλος κ 'Σια). The owner of this company, the Cretan Pangalos Drandakis, had studied in Heliopolis near Cairo and transferred its name to the city to be founded.

In 1925, by decree of the President Pavlos Koundouriotis, a first development plan by the architect Aristomenis Valvis was published, which is also the basis of today's development. In 1927, two buses were purchased to transport workers and residents, but also potential buyers of land, from Athens to Ilioupoli. In May 1928 Ilioupoli was recognized as a settlement in the municipality of Brachami and in October of the same year it was independent as a rural municipality (kinotita) . At that time there were 569 inhabitants, 117 of them refugees from Turkey.

The first houses of the new community were single-story, small and widely scattered. The water had to be bought from water carriers or drawn from wells. It was not until 1934 that the OULEN company began to supply water . The construction company was dissolved in 1936 and transferred a large part of the land to the community. From this time the community grew steadily, there were further development plans in the years 1932 and 1967. The decisive increase took place in the 1960s to 1980s, when the communities on the Athens plain grew together to form a metropolis with a population of over a million. After the population of 10,000 was exceeded, Ilioupoli was upgraded to a municipality (dimos) in 1963 .

The main traffic axis for inner-city car traffic is Vouliagmeni Boulevard, which runs along the western municipal boundary . The continuation of the Athens bypass to the east, the Greek A 64 , to the south into the municipal area is being planned.
