Egaleo ( Greek Αιγάλεω ( n. Sg. ), Also Aegaleo ) is an industrial municipality in the west of Athens , a suburb of Athens.
Location and history
Egaleo is located west of the Kifisos River and in the southeast of Mount Egaleo , immediately adjacent to downtown Athens and only approx. 6 km from the Acropolis .
The city extends on both sides of the ancient " Holy Road " ( Greek Ιερά Οδός ) from Athens to Eleusis . At the place Gephyra (Gephyreis), where the "Holy Road" crosses the Kifisos on a bridge, the travelers are said to have been vulgarly insulted and ridiculed.
Egaleo was named after the mountain of the same name, from which the Persian king Xerxes I pursued the destruction of his fleet at the Battle of Salamis .
The area was first settled by refugees in 1922 after the catastrophe in Asia Minor . The surrounding settlements merged in 1934 under the name "Nees Kidonies" until 1941 the municipality of Egaleo was created.
Economy and Transport
Egaleo is the terminus of line 3 (“Blue Line”) of the metro .
Important roads that serve local and long-distance traffic intersect in the city:
- The highway 8 ( GR-A8 ), the Athens with the seaport Patras connects;
- The national road 1 runs over the Kifisos boulevard ( Λεοφόρος Κηφισόυ ), which merges into the GR-A1 motorway north of Egaleo and crosses the Attiki Odos ( Αττική Οδός 'Attische Strasse' motorway 6, GR-A6 ).
- The motorway 65 ( GR-A65 ), also called "Egaleo-Ring", runs on the other (western) side of the mountain Egaleo, after which it is named. It forms a crossbar to the Attiki Odos.
Dealing with traffic jams has been one of the city's biggest problems over the past few decades.
About a quarter of the municipality is an industrial area, mainly in the east in the area of the Kifisos River.
Most of the residents are workers.
