The A2 Ethniki ( Greek Α2 Εθνική ) is a basketball league from Greece . After the Basket League , it is the second highest class in the country and consists of 16 teams.

history

The A2 Ethniki was founded in 1986. In 1987 Panellinios Athens went down in history as the first master . Up until 1990, at the end of the regular season, the two winners were allowed to take part in the playoff games for the national championship in addition to their promotion to the A1 Ethniki . With three titles each, the two Athens teams from Sporting and Papagou are record winners of the A2 Ethniki.

Game mode

Each club plays in a first and second round against each of the other teams. After 26 match days, the championship is over and the first in the table immediately moves up to the highest Greek division. The clubs in places 2-5 play the second promoted team in a play-off round. The last two clubs in the table are relegated to the B Ethniki . The teams in places 11-14 play two more relegated teams in a play-off round.
