Panionios Athens actually Panionios GSS, ( Greek Πανιώνιος Γ.Σ.Σ. ) is the outsourced basketball section of the Greek sports club Panionios . The department was founded in Smyrna in 1919 and is now based in Nea Smyrni , a suburb of Athens .

history

The basketball department of Panionios first took part in the 1928/1929 season in the Greek championship, where they immediately took second place. The greatest success of the team is the cup victory in 1991, when you and Theofanis Christodoulou beat PAOK Saloniki 73-70 in the final . 1977 and 1995 the club was also in the final of the cup competition, but had to admit defeat both times. In 1987 the club was in the final of the Greek championship and was defeated by the then series champion Aris Saloniki . The most significant international successes were the semi-finals in 1994 and 1998 in the Korać Cup . In the 2008/2009 season, the club took part in the ULEB Euroleague for the first time. In the 2012/2013 season the club took part in the ULEB Eurocup . After the club finished last in the table at the end of the 2014/15 season , he was relegated from the Basket League after 33 years of membership . He was a member again from the 2017/18 season .

Indoor arena

Between 2004 and 2009, Panionios played its home games in the indoor arena that was newly built for the 2004 Summer Olympics . Since the 2009/2010 season, Panionios has been playing again at the old place, the Klisto Neas Smyrnis, which has a capacity of 2,000 spectators.
