Suburbs of Athens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term “City of Athens” only refers to the core city of Athens with around 790,000 inhabitants. The greater Athens area, which roughly corresponds to that of the prefecture of Attica , has around 3.9 million inhabitants (F 2004). This agglomeration includes suburbs of Athens such as the port city of Piraeus or the cities of Marousi and Peristeri . These cities have their own districts (Gitonies) and some have their own infrastructure, such as supplementary bus routes.

There are some cluster formations within the greater Athens area. Every city has certain economic focuses. The sales centers of many chemical and pharmaceutical companies are mostly to be found in Marousi , traditional hotels and high-end boutiques in Kifissia .

The city limits of the municipalities merge seamlessly and are often difficult to recognize, but they are signposted on the main roads with signs for entering and leaving the town. It often happens that a street name in the greater Athens area is assigned by the different municipalities, such as the street Moschonision , this one by 11 municipalities. If a passenger uses the taxi, it is necessary to say which of the 11 Moschonision streets you want to go to by specifying the suburb (in Athens by specifying the district).

In the following list, the suburbs are roughly arranged in the cardinal directions from the city of Athens.
