Neo Psychiko ( Greek Νέο Ψυχικό ( n. Sg. ), Also obsolete Neon Psychikon ) is a northeastern suburb of Athens , Greece .
Neo Psychiko was spun off from the Chalandri community in 1946 and was initially a rural community (kinotita). In 1982 it was upgraded to a municipality (dimos). On January 1, 2011, Neo Psychiko was merged with Filothei and Psychiko to form the new Filothei-Psychiko parish , in which it has since formed a parish.
history
The area was agricultural and forested until it was settled in the 1920s. Today, green areas are limited to a few squares, roadsides and a few green hills in the north. Psychiko was founded in 1923 and grew over the years until the area was colonized by Neo Psychiko. It was recognized as a parish in 1946 and a parish in 1982. According to a legend, the name - it means peace of mind (from Greek ψυχή , soul) - comes from the fact that the legendary marathon runner , who brought the news of the victory at Marathon to Athens, rested and recovered in this place. According to another legend, St. Filothea opened a spring here in the 16th century to refresh travelers and the surrounding farmers. A third story says the name comes from a spring that was opened on the south side of the retirement home, probably from the Hadrian Aqueduct that was torn down in the 19th century.
location
Neo Psychiko is about 6 km northeast of the Acropolis , a little south of the Attiki Odos and the Olympic Sports Complex . It is bordered by Chalandri to the north, Filothei to the northwest , Psychiko to the west, Athens to the southwest , Papagou to the southeast , Cholargos to the east, and Agia Paraskevi to the northeast . It is mainly accessed through Kifissias Boulevard in the west and Mesogeion Boulevard in the east.
mayor
Mayor Pandelis Charokopos was elected in the elections in October 2006 with a narrow majority of 50.65% in the second ballot and held office until the end of 2010. Since 2010, Neo Psychiko has been a district of the new Filothei-Psychiko municipality. The new mayor has since been Pandelis Xyridakis (Παντελής Ξυριδάκης).
Environmental policy
The municipality plays a pioneering role in environmental protection: since the early 1990s, numerous traffic-calming measures have been taken, research projects to improve road safety have been carried out, an environmental education park was set up in 1992, a cycle path network is being expanded, recycling bins are on every corner, energy-saving lamps and hybrid vehicles as Buses are used.
