Chalandri ( Greek Χαλάνδρι ( n. Sg. ), Outdated also Χαλάνδριον Chalandrion ) is a Greek city in the east of the Attica region and a suburb of Athens.

location

Chalandri is located approximately 12 km north of Athens city center. It belongs to the Athens-North regional district of the greater Athens area. In the north it borders on Marousi , in the south on Filothei-Psychiko . The development of the suburbs merges into one another, even if the green area per inhabitant is the largest in Athens.

history

political protest

At the site of today's Chalandri was Phlya ( Greek Φλύα Flya ), one of the largest of the ten Athenian demoi and part of the administrative region of Kekropis . Phlya was the hometown of Euripides . Among other fertility cults, the mysteries of the goddess Gaia were located here . The lithagogia ( Greek λιθαγωγία , literally "stone guide ") ran through the area of today's Chalandria , a transport route on which the marble blocks were brought from the quarries on Pendeli to the center of Athens. A section was only recently excavated on Pendelis Boulevard.

Remains of an aqueduct and a burial chamber with a barrel vault from the 2nd century AD have been preserved from Roman times , which was later converted almost unchanged into the chapel of the Panagia Marmariotissa ( Greek Παναγία Μαρμαριότισσα ).

In the Greek War of Independence in 1821 there was a skirmish between the rebels and the Turks approaching from Athens near Chalandri.

Still a popular rural excursion destination in the first decades of the 20th century, Chalandri experienced dynamic growth , mainly due to the settlement of refugees after the catastrophe in Asia Minor in 1923 and as a result of the economic development of the last few decades. In particular due to the expansion of Athens in the 1960s and 1970s, which was associated with heavy construction activity, the previously rural municipality has grown together with the capital and other suburbs to form a metropolitan region.
