Chaidari ( Greek Χαϊδάρι ( n. Sg. ), Traditionally also Greek Χαϊδάριον , Haidarion or Chaidarion ) is a suburb in the northwest of the Greek capital Athens .

geography

Chaidari extends at the foot of Mount Egaleo to the coast of the Gulf of Elefsis in the west. It is located about six kilometers northwest of the Acropolis, north of Piraeus , southeast of Eleusis , south of Attiki Odos and west of Kifissou boulevard ( Highway 1 ). It is bordered to the south by Nikea , Perama , Keratsini , Korydallos and Agia Varvara , to the east by Peristeri , to the northeast by Petroupolis , to the north by Aspropyrgos and to the west by the Gulf of Elefsis.

The eastern part of the municipality, which was previously used for agriculture, was urbanized in the 1950s to 1980s.

In the north of the municipality there is a new clinic of the Medical Faculty of the University of Athens .

The Dafni pine forest to the west and south-west belongs to the municipality. The military area and the shipyards of Skaramanga are striking .

history

The municipality extends along the "Holy Road", on which the procession from Athens to Elefsis moved every year during the Eleusinian Mysteries . In ancient times, the Attic dēmos Hermos was located in the area of ​​today's municipality of Chaidari . Here was Dexippus born.

Greek struggle for freedom

During the Greek struggles for freedom in 1826 two battles took place two days apart in the area of ​​Chaidari, the battle of Chaidari on August 6, 1826 and a fight on August 8, 1826 between Georgios Karaiskakis and the French philhellene Charles Nicolas Fabvier Kioutachi Pasha faced.

Chaidari concentration camp

During the German occupation, a concentration camp was set up in Chaidari in October 1943. The main purpose of this camp was to accommodate the numerous prisoners who were raided in various parts of Athens.

The average number of prisoners was 2,000, a total of 25,000 prisoners were housed in the Chaidari concentration camp in 1943/44. 1900 of them were executed, many deported to Germany. Jews from Athens and other parts of Greece were deported from Chaidari to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp.

Population development

In 1955 Chaidari had 13,773 inhabitants, in 1981 the population had grown to 47,396 people.

Attractions

  • Dafni Monastery : The picturesque ruins of Dafni Monastery are located in a pine forest on the Holy Road on a low pass through the Egaleo Mountains. A temple of Apollo was located here in ancient times . To the southwest of the monastery is a cave that has been in it since the 5th century BC. Chr. Pan and the nymphs were worshiped. West of the monastery was a sanctuary of Aphrodite from classical times, of which only small remains can be seen.
