Heraklion ( Greek Ηράκλειο ( n. Sg. ), Outdated also Heraklion or Heraklion , to distinguish it from the capital of Crete of the same name Heraklion usually referred to as Heraklion Attikis ) is a suburb of Athens .
location
Heraklion is located in northeast Attica, 10 kilometers north of the Acropolis. It borders Pefki-Lykovrysi to the north, Marousi to the east, Metamorfosi to the northwest, and Nea Ionia to the southwest .
A distinction is made between the three districts of Ano Iraklio, Neo Iraklio and Paleo Iraklio.
history
In ancient times, the Attic Demos Hephaestia (also Hephaestiadae or Ifestiades) with a temple of Heracles , from which the later name is derived, was located here. The orator Jesse , who is said to have been a teacher of Demosthenes , lived here.
During the rule of the Ottoman Empire , the place was called Arakli. In 1837 the Bavarian-Greek King Otto settled veterans of his auxiliary corps in Arakli. Their families were assimilated after a few generations, German surnames have been preserved.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the barely built-up, but agriculturally used and forested area was a popular Athens excursion destination. From 1922 onwards, the population increased due to the Ottoman Greeks who had been expelled after the Asia Minor catastrophe . Elevated to a city in 1939 with a population of around 10,000, Heraklion gradually turned into a residential area in Athens. A coal mine and quarries increased the influx.
