Life
Langenbuch studied at the Kiel University of Medicine, 1869, he was with a record of the Querruptur the aorta by violence doctorate . He then worked as an assistant to Friedrich von Esmarch . After participating in the Franco-Prussian War , Langenbuch went to Berlin in 1871, where he worked at the Bethanien Hospital . In 1872 he became director of the Lazarus Hospital .
In 1901 Langenbuch died of peritonitis as a result of perforated appendicitis .
Act
On July 15, 1882, Langenbuch performed the first cholecystectomy on a 43-year-old man who had suffered from biliary colic for 16 years . The abdominal wall was opened via an approximately 10 to 15 centimeter long subcostal incision and an equally long incision along the edge of the rectus abdominis muscle . The removed organ showed thickened walls and contained two small gallstones . There was no acute inflammation. The patient was discharged as cured eight weeks later. This procedure was preceded by operations on animals, in which Langenbuch found that they were viable without a gallbladder , and studies on cadavers. The method initially met with open rejection from other surgeons, and Langenbuch's first reports were largely ignored. It wasn't until the turn of the century that cholecystectomy began to gain acceptance.
