The American Journal of Surgery , abbreviated Am. J. Surg. , is a scientific journal published by Elsevier-Verlag on behalf of seven surgical societies. The journal was founded in 1890 under the name American Journal of Surgery and Gynecology . From 1914 to 1926 the journal also published a Quarterly Supplement on Anesthesia edited by Francis Hoeffer McMechan . In 1926 it was shortened to The American Journal of Surgery and the tape count started again. The magazine is published twelve times a year. Works are published that deal with all aspects of surgery.

The impact factor in 2014 was 2.291. According to the statistics of the ISI Web of Knowledge , the journal with this impact factor ranks 59th out of 198 journals in the surgery category.
