Michael Bruce Curry (born March 13, 1953 in Chicago , Illinois ) is Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America . He is the first African American in this role.

Life

Michael Bruce Curry was ordained a priest on December 9, 1978, and was ordained bishop on June 17, 2000 in Duke Chapel by Robert Hodges Johnson , James Gary Glosser, and Barbara Clementine Harris . He served as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina until his induction as a Primate of the Episcopal Church in November 2015 .

On May 19, 2018, Curry preached the sermon at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle .
