Prince Harry and Meghan Markle before the 2017 Christmas service

The couple has been in a relationship since June 2016, and it was made public on November 8, 2016. On November 27, 2017, Clarence House announced the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for the spring of 2018. The couple got engaged in London in early November. Prince Harry had an engagement ring made by Cleave and Company. The ring is set with a diamond from Botswana and two smaller diamonds from Harry's mother Diana's jewelry collection. On December 15, 2017, Clarence House announced May 19, 2018 as the wedding date.

The Prince of Wales, the Queen and her husband , British Prime Minister Theresa May and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said they were delighted. Following the announcement, the couple gave an exclusive interview to BBC News’s Mishal Husain .

The Queen agreed to the marriage on March 14, 2018, in accordance with the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, according to which the first six people in line to the throne require the monarch's consent to marry.

Markle attended a Catholic school early in school, but did not identify with that belief and joined the Church of England before the wedding . The church no longer refuses divorcees to marry. After the engagement, Markle announced that he wanted to take British citizenship. This process will take years. According to some sources, she wants to keep her US citizenship. At the end of November 2017, Kensington Palace indicated that a decision had not yet been made. The couple celebrated Christmas 2017 with the royal family at the Queen's estate in Sandringham . The official engagement photos were taken by Alexi Lubomirski, a former assistant to Mario Testino , at Frogmore House , and Kensington Palace released them on December 21, 2017.

St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle

The wedding ceremony took place on May 19, 2018 at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle . The Dean of Windsor , David Conner, presided over the service, and the Archbishop of Canterbury , Justin Welby , took the couple's marriage vows from the couple. The sermon was delivered by Bishop Michael Bruce Curry , Senior Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America . Meghan Markle renounced the promise of obedience to her husband Prince Harry. Prince William was his brother's best man, as this Williams best man had been. The reading from the Song of Songs was given by Prince Harry's aunt and sister of Princess Diana, the Baroness Fellowes.

Meghan's wedding ring is a gift from Queen Elizabeth II. It is made from Welsh gold . Prince Harry's ring is made of platinum .

The bride wore a simple white silk dress that Clare Waight Keller, Artistic Director at Givenchy , had designed. With a dress with a submarine collar, a five-meter-long veil made of silk and organza and a train, she wore a tiara from the 1920s that Queen Mary had made. The white bridal bouquet was made of lilies of the valley, sweet peas, jasmine, star umbels and forget-me-nots, including twigs of myrtle. Harry appeared with the Queen's permission in the parade uniform and frock coat of the Blues and Royals Guard Cavalry Regiment , of which he was a member until 2015.

Family celebration

After the service, the couple rode through Windsor in an open carriage , where thousands of people cheered. Following this, Queen Elizabeth II invited to a lunchtime reception in St George's Hall , at which Prince Charles gave the wedding speech and which was performed by Elton John, among others .

Prince Charles had invited family members and close friends of the couple to the wedding ball that evening at Frogmore House . Meghan also gave a speech, breaking British tradition. She wore an evening gown made by Stella McCartney and an emerald-cut aquamarine ring that had previously belonged to Princess Diana. The wedding cake was multi-tiered with lemon and elderflower flavor, decorated with peonies. The host bore the cost of the reception from his own portfolio. At 11 p.m. there was a firework display.

Costs and holiday regulations

The cost of security measures alone, amounting to 34 million euros, was borne by the taxpayer. The royals paid the cost of the wedding celebration in the amount of 2 million euros. Unlike the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton , the wedding day was not a national, non-working holiday.

Guests

The guest list included about 600 people who have a "direct relationship" with the couple. Amal Clooney and husband George Clooney , Victoria Beckham and David Beckham , Serena Williams , Oprah Winfrey , Elton John , former colleagues of the bride from the television series Suits and Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas, two former friends of the groom, attended the wedding .

200 close friends of the couple were invited to a post-wedding reception at Frogmore House given by Prince Charles. In addition, around 1200 citizens were invited to greet the couple in front of the chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Prime Minister Theresa May , opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn and other national and international politicians, including incumbent US President Donald Trump and his predecessor Barack Obama , were not invited . Numerous guests from politics were invited to the wedding of Harry's brother William, possibly because of his position as future monarch.

music

The following pieces of music were played during the service: Eternal source of light divine (from the Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne ) by George Frideric Handel ; the motet If ye love me by Thomas Tallis ; Stand by me by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller and Ben E. King (arranged for choir by Mark Delisser); and The Lord bless you and keep you by John Rutter . After the wedding, the cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason played a Sicilienne by Maria Theresia von Paradis , Après un rêve by Gabriel Fauré and the Ave Maria by Franz Schubert . An orchestra played the first movement (Allegro) from the Symphony No. 1 by William Boyce ; The conclusion was the Amen / This Little Light of Mine sung by the gospel choir by Etta James , Jester Hairston and Harry Dixon Loes.

Charitable donations

The couple asked in April 2018 to donate to charity instead of wedding favors. There was a list of proposed donation recipients:

  • CHIVA (Children's HIV Association; support for young people living with HIV in Great Britain and Ireland)
  • Crisis (homeless assistance)
