Mario Testino (born October 30, 1954 in Lima , Peru ) is a portrait and fashion photographer living in London . Outside of the fashion scene, his name is little known, but many of his works are still among the most famous photographs. According to ZEIT , he is "probably the most famous fashion photographer in the world."

Life

Mario Testino mainly works for all the important fashion magazines, such as Vogue or Vanity Fair . He has also photographed campaigns for almost all of the major fashion labels. This includes, for example, the Versace label . Here Testino drew himself a. a. 1994 responsible for a campaign with pop singer Madonna . Another well-known series of photos by Testino was published in 1997 by Vanity Fair magazine. It was a cover story about Princess Diana . The recordings were later published as a book in connection with an exhibition that opened at Kensington Palace in November 2005 .

Campari engaged Mario Testino to photograph Hollywood star Jessica Alba in 12 different motifs for the 2009 company calendar. For Testino it is already the second work for Campari: In 2007 Salma Hayek stood in front of the lens as a calendar motif for the photographer.

In 2012, Testino opened the non-profit cultural organization Mate in his hometown of Lima , which promotes the works of Peruvian artists. A year earlier he was awarded honorary membership by the Royal Photographic Society . In his strategic and creative work on campaigns such as books, Testino is supported by his own agency Higher + Higher .

In September 2017, a large part of the photographer 's collection will be auctioned at the London auction house Sotheby’s . The proceeds will go to the Mate Museum in Lima.

As part of #MeToo , harassment allegations were made against Testino in January 2018 in the New York Times , which led Condé Nast , Burberry and Michael Kors to suspend their collaboration. Testino denies the allegations.
