Etta James
Etta James (born January 25, 1938 as Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles , California - † January 20, 2012 in Riverside , California) was an American rhythm and blues , blues , gospel , soul , rock 'n'-roll and jazz singer .
Life
Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins to a 14-year-old African American woman. She received her first singing lessons at the age of five from James Earle Hines , director of the Echoes-of-Eden Choir at St. Paul Baptist Church in Los Angeles. In 1950 she moved to San Francisco with her family .
In 1952 she founded the trio "The Creolettes", which was discovered by Johnny Otis . There are numerous versions of how this discovery came about. Otis' version is that Etta James walked into his hotel room after one of his performances in San Francisco and talked him into an audition . Etta James herself says that this was one of the girls from the trio and that they sang Otis at two o'clock. Otis suggested that she swap the syllables of her first name and make a stage name out of it. Her first recordings, together with "The Otis", followed soon after. The song The Wallflower , an answer to Hank Ballard's song Work with Me, Annie , became an instant hit in the R&B world. The song was later reinterpreted by Georgia Gibbs as Dance with Me, Henry .
Until 1960 she sang as Etta James & the Peaches , after which she moved to Chess Records . Nevertheless, for a long time there was no success in the mainstream. Commercial success only came after she switched to Chess Records. It started with All I Could Do Was Cry and continued through the 1960s. With the rise of disco music at the beginning of the 1970s, her success decreased again, but her previous work has already made her an icon of American music. After successfully fighting her drug addiction, she got involved in anti-drug projects. In 1978 and 1980 she was the opening act for the Rolling Stones . At the opening of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, she sang When the Saints Go Marching In . In 1993 she received the Living Blues Award for best blues artist from the critics ; an award that she also received in 2004. In 1995 she published her biography Rage to Survive , written by David Ritz.
Her singing was characterized by a rich, resonant, mature voice that is a young audience primarily known because the mid-1990s in a Coca Cola commercial film with the Muddy Waters -Klassiker I Just Wanna Make Love to You was heard . In Austria, at the end of the 1990s, their biggest hit, At Last, was used in a vinegar commercial and was once again known to a wide audience. The film Cadillac Records shows the phase of her life from the move to Chess Records (1960) to the death of the founder Leonard Chess (1969). The film was released in German cinemas on April 23, 2009. Beyoncé embodies Etta in it.
In 2006 James released a cover version of the Prince song Purple Rain and in 2011 it can be heard as a sample on the single levels of the Swedish DJ Avicii .
Her sons Donto ( drums ) and Sametto ( bass ) are also musicians and were part of their backing band, The Roots Band . Sametto also produced her Grammy-winning album Let's Roll .
Etta James, who had Alzheimer's disease , leukemia and hepatitis C , made her last public appearance in April 2009. She died on January 20, 2012 of complications from severe pneumonia , just three days after the death of her discoverer Johnny Otis.
