Cadillac Records is a 2008 American musical film.

action

Leonard Chess is the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland and lives in Chicago with his young wife Revetta . The poor man dreams of a family with financial security and a Cadillac . He first opened a club for African American blues musicians . There Muddy Waters appears with his band. Leonard founded the blues label Chess Records in 1947 and signed Muddy Waters as the first artist. They record a first song and take this record to Mississippi , the home of Muddy Waters. There Leonard got the song to be played on the radio. They have a first hit and Leonard gives Muddy Waters his first Cadillac. This is becoming a tradition: every successful artist on Chess Records receives a Cadillac. Back in Chicago, Leonard Chess set up a new studio with his brother Phil and took other artists such as the harmonica player Little Walter under his wing. The label produces hit after hit. In the end, they discover Chuck Berry, the blues star whose style of music also reaches white youth across the country. Now all that's missing is a female star. With the young Etta James they find a voice that not only has an artistic charisma on Leonard, but also interests him privately. Etta also feels drawn to Leonard, but knows that he will never be her life partner. Leonard eventually leaves his company. He gets into his Cadillac, sees his company logo one last time in the rearview mirror and dies of a heart attack on the next turn. Leonard Chess is dead, but the story of the blues stars of Chess Records continues. Muddy Waters flies to London and his world career begins.

backgrounds

The plot of Cadillac Records is roughly based on the true story of the record label Chess Records , operated by Leonard Chess and his brother Philip , which is considered one of the most important labels for blues and other varieties of black music . The careers of Chuck Berry , Muddy Waters , Howlin 'Wolf , Willie Dixon and other musicians are inextricably linked with Chess Records .

Reviews

Josef Schnelle wrote in the Berliner Zeitung that the film looked like a film adaptation of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland . He finds that director Darnell Martin, however, has given little trouble with the zeitgeist of the 1950s and the political environment.

According to Sebastian Handke in the Tagesspiegel , the film is one of the best music films in a long time and Beyoncé shows with her moving portrayal that she can be more than just face and voice for the cinema.

Awards

Beyoncé Knowles' song Once in a Lifetime received a 2009 Golden Globe Award nomination in the Best Song category. The film also won a 2008 Black Reel Award for best African American film. The actors were awarded the ensemble award and Jeffrey Wright as best supporting actor.
