Adrien Brody (born April 14, 1973 in Woodhaven ( Queens ), New York City ) is an American film actor . He is an Oscar winner and, along with Christopher Lambert, the only American actor to win the French César film award in the Best Actor category .

Life

Adrien Brody is the son of Elliot Brody, a retired history professor and painter of Polish - Jewish descent , and Sylvia Plachy, a photojournalist born in Hungary to a Catholic aristocratic father and a Czech Jewish mother. Brody grew up in Queens and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts at the age of twelve . He graduated from the High School for the Performing Arts . In 1992 he had a motorcycle accident in Los Angeles in which he was seriously injured. It took him a few months to recover. Brody broke his nose three times in total while doing stunts. The last incident happened while filming Summer of Sam .

After several appearances in films, which earned him a lot of critical praise, but were ignored by the audience, he achieved his breakthrough in 1998 with The Narrow Ridge . Four years later, Roman Polański cast him for the title role of his Holocaust drama The Pianist . For his portrayal of the Polish Jew Władysław Szpilman , he received the 2003 Oscar for Best Actor . At the age of 29, he was the youngest actor to receive this award in the leading actor category. In his acceptance speech he emphasized that any kind of war causes great suffering and must therefore be prevented. This silent demonstration against the Iraq war , which contrasted Michael Moore's loud appearance, was highly valued, but also resented by conservatives.

In 2004 he played a mentally handicapped young man in the film The Village by M. Night Shyamalan . A year later, Brody took on a leading role in Peter Jackson's adventure film King Kong , in which he can be seen alongside Naomi Watts and Jack Black and again meets his German colleague Thomas Kretschmann from The Pianist . In the same year he directed the film The Jacket alongside Keira Knightley , in which he played a war veteran who had to be treated in psychiatry . In 2009 he played in Dario Argento's thriller Giallo in a double role both the investigative inspector and (under the pseudonym Byron Deidra ) his opponent, the jaundiced serial killer. Because he was not paid for the role according to the contract, he later sued the producers of the film.

In 2010 he played the role of the elite soldier Royce in Predators , a sequel to the 1987 film Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger .

In 2006 he began a relationship with the Spanish actress Elsa Pataky . The separation followed three years later.
