The 16th presentation of the Independent Spirit Awards took place on March 24, 2001 and was moderated by John Waters .

Summary

After Ang Lee had been unsuccessfully nominated for two films ( The Wedding Banquet (Hsi yen) and Eat Drink Man Woman (Yin shi nan nu) ), he won awards for Tiger & Dragon (Wo hu cang long) - the best film and the best director. Darren Aronofsky's drug drama Requiem for a Dream received two awards and three nominations, as did Kenneth Lonergan's You Can Count on Me . Willem Dafoe won his first Independent Spirit Award with his third nomination. Lars von Trier , nominated for the second year in a row, won the award - the best foreign film for Dancer in the Dark . Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai was nominated for best film, but received no other nominations.
