The second presentation of the Independent Spirit Awards took place on March 28, 1987 in Los Angeles .

Summary

Oliver Stone won two awards that evening (direction and screenplay) for Platoon and competed against himself in both categories (for Salvador ). Platoon was the big winner with four awards (film, director, screenplay, camera), at the Oscars there were also four trophies. Despite six nominations, David Lynch's Blue Velvet was only able to win through with the best leading actress ( Isabella Rossellini ). (Rossellini won against Laura Dern , who was nominated for the second year in a row.) Jim Jarmusch's Down by Law and Rob Reiner's Stand by Me couldn't win a single prize. Oliver Stone's second film in the running, Salvador , won the Best Actor ( James Woods ) award . The then newcomer Spike Lee won the award for best debut film with Nola Darling against talking heads singer David Byrne , who was nominated for his only feature film to date, True Stories . Doris Dörrie comedy Men was nominated for best foreign film, but lost to James Ivory E. M. Forster film version Room with a View (A Room with a View) .
