The 23rd Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place on February 23, 2008, traditionally the day before the Oscars . The film award honors Hollywood- independent film productions from the past calendar year, so-called independent films . The award ceremony was broadcast live in the USA on IFC television.

The nominations were announced by the Film Independent on November 27, 2007 on the beach in Santa Monica , California. Are considered favorites Julian Schnabel and Todd Haynes ' film biographies The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (original title: Le Scaphandre et le Papillon , American release title: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly ) and I'm Not There and Jason Reitman's comedy Juno . All three feature films received four nominations each and have a chance of winning in the important categories of film and directing. Schnabel's French production had already won the director's award at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival . Hayne's film based on the life of Bob Dylan was recognized at the 2007 Venice Film Festival with the Actor Award for Cate Blanchett , which was considered for Best Supporting Actress .

Tamara Jenkins ' Die Geschwister Savage also received four nominations, although it was not nominated in the Best Picture category. In the comedy, Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman can be seen as siblings who are confronted with their father (played by Philip Bosco ) in need of care . Jeffrey Blitz's high school comedy Rocket Science , Michael Winterbottom's literary adaptation A Courageous Path with Angelina Jolie , Gus Van Sant's Cannes contribution Paranoid Park and Ang Lee's erotic thriller Danger and Desire received three nominations each . Lee's contribution, which was awarded the Golden Lion at this year's Venice Film Festival , was considered, among other things, in the two main actor categories, in which the Chinese actors Tony Leung Chiu Wai and cinema debutante Tang Wei have a chance with the US film award to be awarded. In the Best Foreign Film category, Romania's and French candidates for an Oscar nomination in the category meet with Cristian Mungius Drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days , winner of the Golden Palm of Cannes, and Vincent Paronnauds and Marjane Satrapi's comic adaptation Persepolis Best foreign language film in a row. Both productions vied for the European Film Award on December 1, 2007 , with the better ending for Mungius Film, while the German Oscar nominee On the Other Side was not nominated by Fatih Akın . Filmmaker Adrienne Shelly, who was murdered in November 2006, received a posthumous nomination for the script for her last directorial work Jenna's Cake - There is no recipe for love . Zoe Cassavete's feature film Broken English was nominated for her first screenplay .
