John Carney (* 1972 in Dublin ) is an Irish musician , director and screenwriter .

Life

Carney began his cultural career in 1991 as the bassist for the Irish rock band The Frames , with whom he played until 1993 and for which he also directed several video clips . In 2001 he directed was involved in the script of the film On the Edge with Stephen Rea and Cillian Murphy . In 2003 he wrote the script and directed (both together with his brother Kieran Carney and Jerry Hall ) the successful Irish television series Bachelors Walk .

In 2006 he directed the film Once , in which the singer of his former band Glen Hansard and the Czech musician Markéta Irglová star. The film won the World Cinema Audience Award in the Drama category following its premiere on the Galway Film Fleadh at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival .

As a director and screenwriter, he is involved in the series Modern Love (2019), which is based on a weekly column in the New York Times .
