action

15-year-old Conor Lawlor lives in Dublin in 1985 . Ireland's poor economic situation also affects the Conors family. His father Robert does not get any more contracts as an architect and his mother Penny only works part-time. His parents, who also have marital problems, therefore take him from a Jesuit private school and send him to the state Christian Brothers School , where the authoritarian brother Baxter is in charge. Conor hates the new, rough environment and the school, where he is only branded as an outsider, and takes refuge in the world of pop music .

Conor becomes friends with his classmate Darren and gets to know the one year older Raphina, a pretty, seemingly unreachable girl who pretends to be a model . In order to impress her, he offers to let her play in a music video of his band. There is only one problem: there is no such band and Conor has never written a song himself. So without further ado and under the guidance of his older brother Brendan, he and a few guys from the neighborhood founded the band Sing Street , which is based on the musical models The Cure , Duran Duran , The Clash and Spandau Ballet . Conor begins to write his own lyrics, which he sets to music together with the musical all-rounder and band member Eamon. Darren acts as the band's manager and video producer. In contrast to his brother Brendan, who has long since buried his musical dreams, Conor's talent and self-confidence increasingly develop through his success.

It was directed by John Carney , who also wrote the script. Carney had with the films Once and Can a Song Save Your Life? two musical romances had already been created in the previous years, which were positively rated by critics and received numerous awards. Carney said in The Irish Times of his new film set in the Irish music world: I knew the era so well, I didn't have to do any research.

The role of the protagonist Conor was cast with Ferdia Walsh-Peelo , who made his film debut in this film. Actor Aidan Gillen and actress Maria Doyle Kennedy took on the roles of his parents, Robert and Penny. Conor's older brother Brendan is played by Jack Reynor , his love interest Raphina by Lucy Boynton , and Ben Carolan played by his friend Darren.

The shooting took place in the St. Catherine's Park and other parts of Ireland instead Dublin.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 6. The reason for the release states: “The film tells, among other things, of conflicts at school and in the young hero's private life. However, these are not overly dramatic and are usually resolved positively. Children of primary school age are able to understand the descriptions and to process them appropriately. In the young protagonist you will also find a strong and positive figure who will guide you safely through the story. "

Reviews

The film was able to convince 95 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes , is thus in the TOP 100 of the best rated films of 2016 and came second in the 18th Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the category Best Musical / Music Film 2016 .

Martin Schwickert from epd Film describes Sing Street as a film with bizarre charm and dry Irish humor , which is firmly anchored in the rhythm of the 80s, in which the lust for melancholy and a poorly targeted lifestyle were part of the zeitgeist. Schwickert sums up: With 'Sing Street', Carney has succeeded in creating an unrestrained and highly efficient ' crowd pleaser '. A film could hardly be more likeable. Compared to Carney's previous films, Vulture's Bilge Ebiri says : Sing Street is far more boisterous and certainly funnier than ' Once ', but the film is played in a minor key; 'To find happiness in sadness', as one of the characters in the film puts it. Variety's Guy Lodge says: The film, with its great aesthetic ingenuity, is carefully designed to bring [viewers] the pockmarked and shabby appearance of Ireland in the 1980s, sinking into poverty. David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter , on the other hand, recognizes an infectious cheerfulness in the film that extends to its imaginative, fairytale-like ending, but also criticizes the fact that the transitions between the parallel storylines of the narrative could have been smoother. His colleague Scott Feinberg, on the other hand, considers the script that the story dictates to be Oscar-worthy . Rolling Stone's Peter Travers , on the other hand, praises the way the director tells his film: Carney never loses sight of the simple story that is the focus of the film. […] Sing Street is the most romantic film you can find right now, filled with music, fun and the thrill of first love. The reality is haunting, as in all of Carney's films. The sadness also makes the happy moments even more poignant.

Gross profit

Despite good reviews, the film started sluggishly in theaters. Worldwide revenues for the film are $ 13.61 million.
