David Rooney (journalist)

David Rooney is in Australia born and mostly for US magazines and newspapers as a journalist active film , literature and theater critic . After many years working for Variety , including as chief theater critic, Rooney has been chief film critic of The Hollywood Reporter since May 2020 .

Life

Born in Australia, David Rooney lived in Sydney and London, where he managed arthouse cinemas and worked for Time Out magazine before touring the US and moving to Rome in 1989. There he was seen and heard on programs by Canal Plus and Telepiu and was one of the presenters of the Hollywood Party on Rai Radio 3 . From 1991 he started working as a film critic and reported for Variety from the film festivals in Cannes , Venice , Rotterdam , Locarno and San Sebastian in Europe, but also from the Sundance Film Festival and the film festivals in New York and Toronto . Two years later he became Variety's chief correspondent for Italy. In 2003 he moved to New York and was also the chief theater critic of the industry journal from 2004 to 2010.

In the course of a wave of layoffs in spring 2020, Rooney had to leave Variety , as did his long-time colleague Todd McCarthy at The Hollywood Reporter . In May 2020, Rooney was McCarthy's successor as the new chief film critic of The Hollywood Reporter , for whom he had worked since 2010, most recently as chief theater critic.

Rooney's work has also been published over the years in the New York Times , Los Angeles Times, and Rolling Stone . He received two Southern California Journalism Awards for his work and was named Best Theater Critic at the National Entertainment and Arts Journalism Awards. Rooney was also a member of the nomination jury for the Gotham Awards and in 2010 for the Pulitzer Prize .

Rooney is a member of the New York Film Critics Circle and the New York Drama Critics Circle.
