Gotham Award
The Gotham Independent Film Awards , or Gotham Awards for short , are American film awards that have been presented since 1991. They are awarded annually at the end of November / beginning of December by the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) in New York . The non-profit organization IFP, founded in 1979, aims to support independent films , i. H. Films produced outside of the US studio system . Every year the organization sponsors up to 350 new feature and documentary films and in the past has supported such well-known filmmakers as Debra Granik , Miranda July , Michael Moore , Dee Rees and Benh Zeitlin . The film award is intended to contribute to the popularity of independent film and, in contrast to the Independent Spirit Awards, supports the independent film scene on the American east coast. The New York Times , among others, is sponsoring the film awards .
In 2004, the scope of the Gotham Awards was expanded and innovative productions and artists from the fields of film and documentation were awarded national awards by a jury . Since 1999 the gala has been held in New York at Pier 60 of the Chelsea Piers . In 2003, the award ceremony was broadcast on television for the first time. In 2007, the Brooklyn-based Steiner Studios was first chosen as the rental location.
