Independent Spirit Award

The Independent Spirit Awards are US film awards for Hollywood- independent film productions. It is traditionally held the day before the Oscars .

The last award ceremony for films from the 2019 cinema year took place on February 8, 2020.

General

The awards are given in different categories by the organization Film Independent (until 2004 IFP / Los Angeles ) for Hollywood -independent productions, so-called independent films . The first award ceremony was in 1984 under the name FINDIE (Friends of Independents) . Two years later, the awards were given their current names.

Film Independent is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the production and distribution of independent films and aims to help filmmakers from marginalized American society tell their stories. The organization has more than 6,300 members.

Film Independent hosts the Los Angeles Film Festival, which showcases the best American and international independent productions. The Independent Film Awards are presented at this festival, traditionally the evening before the Oscars are awarded in a tent on Santa Monica Beach , not far from Santa Monica Pier . The members of Film Independent vote after the nominated films have been screened to determine the winners.
