The 14th Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place on March 20, 1999.

Summary

Bill Condon's James Whale fantasy Gods and Monsters was Best Picture and won two other awards. Competitors included Paul Schrader's The Hunted (Affliction) with six nominations and no award and Darren Aronofsky's experimental film Pi with three nominations and one award. Pi was beaten as best debut film by the satire The Opposite of Sex , which won another award and two nominations. Wes Anderson beat Paul Schrader , Todd Solondz, and Todd Haynes and became best director. Thomas Vinterbergs won with his Dogma 95 film Das Fest (Festen) over four strong competitors for the best foreign film: John Boorman (nominated for the second time), Shohei Imamura , Takeshi Kitano and Walter Salles .
