biography

Woodard was born the youngest of three children. She got the name Alfre from her godmother, who claimed to have had a vision in which the name Alfre appeared in gold letters. In high school, she was a cheerleader and became passionate about acting after she was convinced to take part in a play at her school.

She later studied acting at Boston University and made a brief appearance in a Broadway play . Then she moved to Los Angeles . Her first major role was in the 1978 film Remember My Name , in which Jeff Goldblum also starred . In 1984 she received an Oscar nomination for best actress in a supporting role for her role in Cross Creek . Her guest appearances on the television series LA Law and Hill Street Blues each earned her an Emmy . She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1993 for her portrayal in the film Passion Fish . In 1999, Woodard received the NAACP Image Award for her leading role in "Down in the Delta" .

Her biggest success so far was the mini-series Miss Evers' Boys . For this she received an Emmy, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a CableACE Award .

She now lives in Santa Monica with her husband, author Roderick Spencer , and two adopted children . She was named one of the Most Beautiful People in America by People Magazine . From 2005 to 2006 Woodard starred in the award-winning television series Desperate Housewives . There she played the mysterious neighbor Betty Applewhite, who held her son Caleb prisoner in the basement.
