4 Heavenly Friends (Original Title: Heart and Souls ) is an American comedy film from director Ron Underwood from 1993 . The comedy stars Robert Downey Jr. , Kyra Sedgwick , Charles Grodin , Alfre Woodard and Tom Sizemore .

action

In 1959, Julia, Harrison Winslow, Penny Washington, and Milo Peck ride a trolleybus in San Francisco . They die after an accident, and at the same moment Thomas is born, to whom they are magically bound. Their spirits show themselves to little Thomas Reilly. And he's the only one who can see her too. This affects the boy so much that people think he is crazy (talking to himself and dancing to songs that the ghosts sing) and then the ghosts make themselves invisible to him to save him further trouble.

After many years, Reilly is already an adult. He is a businessman, his relationship with Anne is in turmoil. The ghosts appear again. Reilly helps the spirits sort out the unfinished business in life. Milo Peck brings back the stolen stamps. The singer Harrison Winslow sings during a concert. Penny Washington learns what happened to her children after her death.

Every time a thing is done, the trolleybus appears with the ghost of the accident driver from the day of her death to take one of the ghosts to the afterlife. The last ghost, that of Juliet, learns that Julia's fiancé has already died, so that she could not tell him her feelings. But she points out to Thomas that he does the same thing with Anne as she does with her fiancé and that he should not repeat her mistake. So she sees her job as done and takes the trolleybus to the afterlife.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on Reel Views that the plot was implausible. The gags are not funny, the audience cannot identify with the characters. Berardinelli praised the portrayal of Tom Sizemore and criticized the portrayals of Kyra Sedgwick, Alfre Woodard, Charles Grodin and Elisabeth Shue.

Rita Kempley compared the film in the Washington Post on August 13, 1993 with the puppet theater. The action works “mechanically”.
