Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the director would like to follow in the footsteps of Robert Altman , which she cannot. "Ingredients" like melodrama and "stupid" turns of the plot are to blame for this. Experienced actors like Joan Chen, Alfre Woodard, Mercedes Ruehl and Dennis Haysbert would face inexperienced actors, giving an unbalanced result. However, the characters are well developed without stereotypes.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on November 17, 2000 that all four storylines involved generation conflicts. Since the stories are “skilfully threaded”, they don't feel like an “exercise”.

Bob Graham wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of November 17, 2000 that patient viewers would learn with film time that it was worth watching ("Patient viewers will find that by the time the sparks start to fly and the tears to flow, the wait will." have been worth it, to say nothing of the laughs ").
