Lainie Kazan (born May 15, 1940 in New York City ; born Lainie Levine ) is an American actress .

Life and accomplishments

Kazan has Spanish, Russian and Jewish ancestors. She made her debut in an episode of the television series Car 54, please report from 1962. In the second half of the 1960s, she also recorded four music albums for the MGM Records label , on which she sang songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David , among others . In the crime film Dayton's Devils (1968) she played one of the bigger roles alongside Leslie Nielsen . She appeared alongside Yul Brynner and Jane Birkin in the adventure drama A Guy Who Steals Horses (1971) . After a few roles in television films, she played in the drama One with a Heart (1982) directed by Francis Ford Coppola on the side of Raúl Juliá and Nastassja Kinski .

In the comedy A Daredevil in New York (1982) Kazan starred alongside Peter O'Toole . For this role she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1983 . In 1985 and 1986 she was in the television series The Paper Chase , for which she was nominated for the CableACE Award in 1987 . Her appearances in the television series Chief Doctor Dr. Westphall in 1987 and 1988 earned her an Emmy nomination in 1988 . She appeared in the musical My Favorite Year based on the earlier comedy, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award in 1993 .

In German-speaking countries she is also known in the role as "Aunt Freida" in the series Die Nanny .

Her role in the comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) brought Kazan a 2003 Golden Satellite Award nomination and - along with several other actors - the Screen Actors Guild Award . In the comedy Love with Risk - Gigli (2003) she appeared on the side of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez ; for this role she was nominated for the 2004 Golden Raspberry . In the action comedy Don't mess with the Zohan (2008), she played opposite Adam Sandler . Kazan married Peter Daniels in 1971, from whom they have since divorced. She has a daughter.

In the 7th season of the series Desperate Housewives Kazan was seen in a supporting role. She played Susan's ( Teri Hatcher ) landlady Maxine Rosen, who runs an adult website.

2017 she participated in the international project Transitraum Else of Else Lasker-Schüler Society under the direction of Andreas Schäfer .
