history
The city name suggests the origin of a Danish settlement. Local historians say that the city name comes from Skeggi ( the bearded one ). It is more likely, however, that the name is derived from the modern Danish terms skæg (beard) and næs (nose), or in geographic terminology as "the headland". Skegness was originally a fishing village with a small harbor until the railway connection in 1875, and since then tourism has played an increasingly important role.
