My Big Fat Greek Wedding is the film adaptation of the life story of the film's screenwriter, Nia Vardalos . She also took on the female lead in the romantic comedy from 2002 . The independent film was made on a budget of $ 5 million and grossed approximately $ 369 million worldwide.

Toula leads a dreary life. She is 30 and still lives with her parents in a traditional Greek family in Chicago . She works day after day in the family restaurant The dancing Zorba’s and she is like a gray mouse because she dresses poorly. But Ian is not a Greek, but a " White Anglo-Saxon Protestant ", which is why she initially keeps the relationship a secret from her parents. But when Ian Toula proposes marriage, she happily accepts.
When Toula's father finds out about this, he wants to forbid her from the relationship. But she prevails, and Ian accommodates the family by being baptized Greek Orthodox . The father gives in and Ian is taken into the family.
But during the preparations for the wedding, turbulence emerges. Ian finds himself exposed to cross-examination with his future father-in-law and, as a vegetarian, finds himself between the pleasure fronts. His very reserved parents are only slowly thawing out in the large and noisy family community. Many family members talk Ian and Toula into wedding planning.
When the wedding celebration takes place, Toula, Ian and their parents finally reconcile, when Toula's parents give the newlyweds their own house and Ian's parents also enjoy the Greek festival.
Toula and Ian have a daughter who, like Toula once did, attends the Greek school. The family now lives in the house next to Toula's parents.

At the end of May 2014 it was reported that a continuation was planned. Nia Vardalos worked out a corresponding script. The film directed by Kirk Jones under the title My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 was released in US cinemas at the end of March 2016 .
