Monsoon Wedding is a film directed by Mira Nair and was shot in New Delhi , India in September 2000 .

action

Five storylines form the basic structure of Monsoon Wedding , the core of which is the wedding of Aditi, to which relatives of the Punjabi Verma family travel from all over the world.

After her affair with married television producer Vikram, who is also her boss, ends, Aditi agrees to marry Hemant, an Indian living in Houston, Texas. But she doesn't want to give up Vikram completely and decides to meet him again.

For Aditi's parents, Lalit and Pimmi, who lead a typical arranged marriage, the nerve-wracking wedding preparations become once again proof of how much they can rely on each other.

PK Dubey, who has made a name for himself with his successful catering company in New Delhi, also organizes Aditi's wedding. There he meets Alice, the Vermas employee, as she is secretly trying on Aditi's wedding jewelry and falls head over heels in love with her.

Aditi's cousin Ayesha is not exactly what Rahul, who traveled to the wedding from Sydney, where he is studying, imagined an Indian woman to be. Sexy and confident, she teaches him a lot about modern India.

Ria, also an unmarried cousin of Aditis, is a writer and observes the hustle and bustle more distantly. But she carries around a dark secret that she eventually reveals.

So the situation comes to a head until the wedding day, when the liberating monsoon finally begins, cools the heated minds and restores family peace.

production

The Indian Mira Nair, who lives in the USA, made a film about a Punjabi family in modern India, consisting of relatives who live in the USA and those from India. The film, produced in the USA and shot in India, contains elements typical of Bollywood such as dance and music.

The shooting, which was only scheduled for 30 days, turned out to be difficult, not only because of temperatures of up to 43 ° C in New Delhi , and could only be finished on time with the help of the entire Nair family.

Monsoon Wedding shows the life of an Indian family between the past and the future, which includes traditions such as an (arranged) wedding, but also life abroad and modern designer culture.

In the life of the Verma family, Eastern and Western models of life have blended together almost completely harmoniously, just as the change between English and Hindi, between Ghazal's traditional Indian love songs and Western pop, is fluid.

In Monsoon Wedding the contrasts of Indian society become particularly clear; not least because of the choice of locations in New Delhi, where the new coexists with the old, the east coexists with the west and the poor coexist with the rich.

Reviews

“A cheerful family film with serious undertones, which is about the conflict between tradition and modernity within the Indian middle class, but also about upbringing and incest. The many characters are skillfully brought to life, the episodes are linked and enriched with music and dance. "
