Mychael Danna (* 20th September 1958 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ; sometimes Michael Danna ) is a Canadian composer of film music and Oscar award winner.

Life and accomplishments

He studied musical composition at the University of Toronto . His younger brother is the music composer Jeff Danna (* 1964). They also worked together in some films, for example in Camelot (2011) or in The Bloody Path of God (1999), in which Jeff wrote the original music and Mychael contributed the song The Blood of Cuchulainn to the soundtrack.

His first soundtrack was in 1978 for "Metal Messiah", the debut film by the Hungarian director Tibor Takács .

Mychael Danna worked repeatedly with director Atom Egoyan , namely in the films Family Pictures (1987), Dream Roles (1989), The Estimator (1991), Montreal Sextet (1991), Lullaby of Death (1993), Exotica (1994), The Sweet Beyond (1997), Felicia, my angel (1999) and Ararat (2002). With director Ang Lee , Danna contributed to the drama The Ice Storm (1997), the civil war drama Ride with the Devil (1999) and the short film Chosen (2001). He wrote the music for the film Shipwreck with Tiger (2012) (directed by Ang Lee, based on the book by Yann Martel ).

He received Genie Awards for his film music in 1994 for Exotica , 1997 for Das süße Jenseits , 2000 for Felicia, mein Engel , 2003 for Ararat and 2006 for Water . In addition to these five prizes, he has been nominated for this award eight times in different years. In 2002 he won the Gemini Award for The Matthew Shepard Story . In 2007 he was nominated at the Grammy Awards for the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack album .

For his score for Ang Lee's literary adaptation Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger , Danna won a Golden Globe Award in 2013 and was nominated for two Academy Awards (film score and film song Pi's Lullaby ). He won the award for best film music.
