Genius award
The Genie Awards were the premier awards for Canadian motion pictures from 1979 to 2012 . The film award was comparable to the Oscar in the USA .
The Genie Awards had nineteen categories and two special prizes. The Golden Reel Award recognized the top box office earnings of the year in Canada. The Claude Jutra Award , which was established in 1993 in honor of the Québec filmmaker of the same name , honored the best first cinema films by directors.
history
It was founded in 1979 by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television . The first award ceremony took place in 1980 . Genie Awards were presented annually in Toronto , Ontario . There were over 4,000 eligible voters working in the Canadian film industry. The statue was designed by the Canadian sculptor Sorel Etrog. The Genie Awards replaced the Canadian Film Awards (also known as the Etrog Awards ), which were presented from 1949 to 1979.
In 2013, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television's Genie Awards and Gemini Awards were replaced by the new Canadian Screen Awards .
