action

The little champion lives in a small house with his grandmother Madame Souza and the neurotic dog Bruno, who likes to bark train trains. Champion is enthusiastic about cycling and receives a children's bike from his grandmother, with which he trains diligently. As a young man, he only had one goal: to take part in the Tour de France . Grandmother Souza supports him as much as she can as a trainer, supervisor and mechanic. You manage to participate in the tour, but Champion is not up to the challenge; At the end of the field he forms a group with two other participants . The French mafia in the American city of Belleville picks up the three with a fake broom wagon and kidnaps them by ship. In Belleville - a mixture of New York and San Francisco - they are supposed to compete as cycling slaves on a machine, whereby the audience can bet amounts of money on them.

Madame Souza takes on the chase on a pedal boat with dog Bruno and ends up penniless in Belleville. She meets the eccentric triplet sisters Les Triplettes de Belleville , aged show stars whose heyday is over. The three get by with small engagements and live exclusively on frogs, which they fish out of a pond with hand grenades. They take Souza into their apartment and their show group. The head of the French mafia is present at an appearance. Bruno smells the smell of Champion on him and draws Souza 's attention. The next day the four ladies sneak into the show restaurant where the cyclists are being held. Armed with a frying pan, a hand grenade and a wrench, they manage to free the prisoners, who drive away with the machine and the four women. A wild chase ensues through the city, which the mafia killers lose because of their unsuitable cars. Madame Souza faces the head of the French mafia alone on the great Belleville bridge and brings him down.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was “an excellent animated film in terms of both form and content, which plays virtuously with set pieces from neorealism, visual artists such as Dix and Grosz and the minimalist slapstick comedy Jacques Tatis , and thereby finds its own, captivating narrative style. The fascinating absurd comedy opens up, like a silent film, without any problems despite the French language. "
