Benoît Charest (born July 16, 1964 in Montreal ) is a Canadian jazz guitarist and film composer .

Life

Charest was born in Montreal in 1964 to an Englishwoman and a French-Canadian. He learned to play guitar at the age of 13 and took an interest in jazz at the age of 17 . He soon took private guitar lessons and studied at McGill University and the University of Montreal . Between 1987 and 1997 he was a regular jazz guitarist at small jazz concerts by Alain Caron , Michel Donato , Ben Monder and others.

Charest wrote the score for the 1991 documentary Montréal rétro by the National Film Board of Canada . From 1993 to 1997 he worked as a jazz guitar teacher at the Cégep de Saint-Laurent in Montreal. From 1999, further soundtracks for cinema and television films followed, but also music for commercials (including United Airlines , McDonald’s ) and plays. For the soundtrack to The Great Race of Belleville , Charest won a César for best film music in 2004 . His song Belleville Rendez-Vous was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song and received a Grammy nomination for Best Song Written for Film, Television or Visual Media the following year .

With Dan Thouin and John Fraboni, Charest forms the Benoît Charest Trio, with whom he performed at the 2013 Festival International de Jazz de Montréal .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
