Michel André Donato CM (* 25. August 1942 in Montreal ) is a Canadian jazz - bassist , pianist and composer of film music.

Donato's father was a tenor saxophonist and band leader, an uncle pianist; He first learned the accordion , at the age of 12 he played autodidactically the piano and at the age of 14 bass. From 1960 to 1963 he studied at the Montréal Conservatory with Roger Charbonneau; In 1964 he played in the Orchester symphonique de Montréal and in 1968/69 in the formation Aquarius Rising of the saxophonist Brian Barley . He also worked with Carmen McRae , Charles Aznavour , Michel Legrand and other artists in the 1960s . After recording with Gerry Niewood (1976), Bernie Senensky and Buddy DeFranco (1977), he returned to Montréal and taught at McGill University and the University of Montréal in 1980 . He also worked with his own quintet in 1982, with Oliver Jones , Oscar Peterson / Louis Hayes and Lorraine Desmarais in the mid-1980s and with singer Karen Young ; the joint album Contredanse was nominated in 1989 for the Juno Award .
