Life

Charles Aznavourian was born in 1924 in a poor student quarter in the Latin Quarter of Paris . His father emigrated Akhaltsikhe in Georgia from his mother fled 1915 before the genocide of the Armenians from Smyrna . Charles' sister Aïda (later A. Aznavour-Garvarentz) was born in Saloniki in 1923 . The family was naturalized in France in 1947 after a 19-year waiting period. Charles Aznavourian officially changed his family name to Aznavour in 1982 .

Charles Aznavour is one of the most prominent figures in French chanson. His breakthrough came in 1946 when Édith Piaf became aware of him and took him on a tour of France and the United States . Aznavour has written over a thousand chansons and interpreted them in five languages ​​(including German, as translated by Ernst Bader , Walter Brandin , Michael Kunze and Jacky Dreksler ). The German sung CD “Das Beste auf Deutsch” was released in 2004. Over the years, over a hundred records have been made. He is considered the most internationally known French singer.

The lyrics of his songs often deal with love . As an actor, Aznavour has appeared in over 70 films, including in 1979 in the Oscar-winning film The Tin Drum by Volker Schlöndorff and in 2002 in Atom Egoyan's reflection on artists, memory and the Armenian history of Ararat . In 2006 he was seen in his last role: The Colonel. In an interview with the FAZ in 2008, he stated that he did not want to make any more films.

Aznavour's international farewell tour ended on February 20, 2006 in Essen . The concert there was considered his last public concert. Aznavour had already given farewell concerts several times, and the one in Essen was not his last either. In September 2006 he started a North American tour, in November 2007 he performed at the Paris Palais des Congrès . In spring 2008 he gave another concert in Montreal (Canada). On stage he was able to convince with physical fitness and his voice in front of houses that were always sold out, performing without teleprompter or other aids and often singing in several languages. In 2009 he worked with arranger John Clayton , who rearranged his chansons and re-recorded them with Aznavour and his Clayton / Hamilton big band.

On September 30, 2006, Aznavour performed in front of 50,000 spectators on Republic Square in the Armenian capital Yerevan and also addressed his audience in Armenian . The occasion was the first state visit by a French President ( Jacques Chirac ) to the now independent Republic of Armenia.

Aznavour was one of the most prominent Armenians worldwide and has campaigned for the country again and again , especially since the devastating Spitak earthquake in 1988 . In December 2008, Aznavour, who was also Armenia's representative at UNICEF, was granted Armenian citizenship .

Since June 2009, Aznavour has been the Armenian Ambassador to Switzerland in Geneva . He also represented his country at the Geneva branch of the United Nations .

On October 7, 2011, a cultural center named after him was opened in Yerevan in his presence as well as those of the French and Armenian presidents.

In 2013 he followed his world tour with concerts in Amsterdam , Tel Aviv and London and in 2014 in Yerevan, Frankfurt, again Tel Aviv, Los Angeles , Rome , Barcelona , Warsaw , Moscow , Montreal and New York. On May 22, 2014, his 90th birthday, Charles Aznavour gave a concert in Germany for the first time in more than a decade as part of his current tour ( O2 World Berlin ).

In 2014 and 2015 he continued his world tour. So he gave u. a. Concerts in Frankfurt / Main, Antwerp , Geneva, St. Petersburg, again Moscow and Yerevan, Madrid , Amsterdam, Brussels and London.

At the beginning of May 2015, his 46th album Encores was released with a total of 12 new chansons.

At the age of 91, he was back on the concert stage in Paris in September 2015 after four years: Aznavour gave a concert series with six celebrated and sold-out performances at the Palais des Sports in Paris . A concert DVD was released at the end of 2015 with the complete concert and many impressions "behind the scenes".

For 2016, as part of his tour, there were again appearances in the USA (New York, Boston , Miami , Los Angeles), Japan ( Tokyo and Osaka ), Canada (Montreal) as well as Dubai and Bucharest . This was followed Marbella , Monaco, Verona , Lisbon , Barcelona, Prague , Amsterdam and Antwerp. In April 2016, Charles Aznavour and George Clooney took part in the commemoration of the 101st anniversary of the beginning of the Armenian genocide in Yerevan . In December 2016, three more concerts followed in the Palais des Sports in Paris.

In 2017 and 2018 the international tour with (sold out) concerts in Paris, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Amsterdam, Prague, St. Petersburg, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, Rome, Milan, Monaco, London, Tokyo , Osaka, Vienna, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne and a tour of seven French cities continued. In August 2017, Aznavour was immortalized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . His last concert was in Osaka on September 19, 2018, less than two weeks before his death.

Private life

Aznavour got married three times. In 1946 he married Micheline Rugel, a year later daughter Seda was born, who followed him into show business as a singer. 1952 son Charles was born. However, after five years, the marriage ended in divorce. In 1955, Aznavour married Evelyne Plessis, the marriage lasted until 1960. This connection resulted in son Patrick (* 1956), who died in 1976.

In 1966 Aznavour met the Swede Ulla Ingegerd Thorssell. They married on January 11, 1967. On January 12, 1968, they were officially married by the Armenian Archbishop in the Armenian Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paris. The artist has three more children with her: Katia (* 1969), Misha Lev (* 1971) and Nicolas (* 1977).

Charles Aznavour died on October 1, 2018, at the age of 94, of complications from cardiac arrest . He was buried in the family vault on the Cimetière communal of Montfort-l'Amaury .
