The Magic Mountain is a literary film adaptation from the year 1982 of the novel of the same name by Thomas Mann . Directed by Hans W. Geißendörfer . The German-French-Italian co-production by the Munich film producer Franz Seitz has a length of 2½ hours in the cinema version and more than double that in the three-part television version.

action

The plot essentially follows that of the novel. In 1907, Hans Castorp, a young Hamburg patrician, visited his cousin, who was suffering from tuberculosis, in a posh sanatorium in the Swiss mountain village of Davos . There the young man is increasingly lost in the morbid world of the place. Yes, he even falls in love with the provocatively beautiful Russian Clawdia Chauchat. He enjoys the sweet, decadent sick life in isolation from the dramatic changes in the lowlands, learns from the Freemason Ludovico Settembrini and the Jesuit Naphta and loses his form, his demeanor more and more. So in the end, although he is not sick, he remains in the isolation of the mysterious place for seven years, until the outbreak of the great war suddenly pulls him and the whole magic mountain society back into reality.

criticism

“Elaborate film adaptation of literature of varying quality, which blurs the great interleaving of topics in Thomas Mann's book of life in favor of ostensible activity. However, only traces remain of the study of the European mental state and the intellectual problems in the first quarter of the 20th century. Particularly noteworthy due to the brilliant performance of the actors and the high level of craftsmanship. "

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
