Mouriès is a commune with 3409 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the south of France in the Bouches-du-Rhône (13) department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region .

geography

It is located below Les Baux-de-Provence at the foot of the Alpilles . The municipality is part of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park . The hamlet of Le Destet belongs to the municipality .

history

The ancient name of Mouriès is Terriciae . In the 6th century BC Chr. , A necropolis built, which is still preserved. It is one of the oldest sanctuaries in Gaul and proves that the place was inhabited during the Hallstatt period .

In 2013 Mouriès was part of the 6th stage of the Tour de France from Aix-en-Provence to Montpellier .

In 2018, Mouriès became the place where chansonnier Charles Aznavour died .
