history
Due to its favorable location on the plain between the Alpilles and the Durance, the area has been inhabited since ancient times. The grottoes in the surrounding hills were first settled around 2000 BC. In the 1st century, the Romans subjugated the tribes that had previously settled in the area and built some villas near the Roumieux road . The place was strategically important on the Durance and was the access point to the Tarascon and Arles plains . It was not until the 10th century that a wooden castrum was built. The place was first mentioned as Castro Reynardi in 1010 . In the late Middle Ages, Châteaurenard was the seat of the Reinhard family (French pronunciation is like "Renard", which also means fox). She gave the place its name. The castle, which was destroyed in 1792, originally had one central tower and four other towers, two of which are still standing today. The place that was then called Casteù Reinard grew through the castle .
