history
Discoveries in caves on the northern slopes of the Alpilles testify to human presence during the Bronze Age. There are many finds from the Gallo-Roman period, such as villas that were scattered over the entire municipality. Hamlets ( mas ) such as La Tabayonne or Le Fray emerged from some of these villas . In the Middle Ages, between the 7th and 15th centuries, the farmers, who lived mainly from sheep breeding, withdrew to the best defensive area. Until the 12th century, the community was dominated by small local rulers. In the 13th and 14th centuries the abbesses of Mollégès ruled the area, in the 17th and 18th centuries the Lorraine dynasty Guise . However, the village was autonomous in many ways and had its own laws. It was able to regain this old freedom as early as 1660, long before the revolution. From 1840 Eygalières was supplied with water from the Durance through a canal . In 1884 the connection to the railroad followed. Agriculture was switched from production for personal use to export within France. The old town center was gradually abandoned by most of the residents. Agriculture was modernized between 1950 and 1970. Many foreigners have recently settled in Eygalières.
