geography

Verquières is located in the north-west of the Bouches-du-Rhône department and in the Durance valley ; this river, which runs a few kilometers to the northeast, forms the border to the neighboring department of Vaucluse . Although the municipality is still part of the valley, the hill country of the Alpilles begins behind its southern edge . About ten kilometers to the southwest is Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and about twenty kilometers to the northwest is the city of Avignon . The connection to Avignon and Orgon runs along the north-eastern edge of the municipality .

The neighboring municipalities of Verquières are Noves in the west and north and Saint-Andiol in the east and south. The settlement area of the district of Les Paluds de Noves , which belongs to Noves, begins immediately behind the western border of Verquières.

History and culture

In the center of the village there are the village church, a school and the Mairie, which serves the community administration, in close proximity to each other . The church, which bears the name Saint-Vérédème , was built in the Romanesque style . It was expanded from 1842 to 1845 and has since had six small side chapels. Its bell tower consists of two floors one above the other, supported on the outer sides by round arches, and is classified as a monument historique . In addition, inside the church there are several wooden statues depicting saints. The facade of the building was restored in 1971.

Scattered across the parish are a few iron crosses, which were made on the initiative of the local pastor Roy during his tenure from 1876 to 1894. A shrine with a figure of Saint Gens du Beaucet is located on the roadside near the western end of the town . A pilgrimage took place in his honor well into the 20th century, and the saint was supposed to ensure enough rain. Directly at the western end of the village there is a park that includes a former dovecote . This area is called Domaine de Beauplan .

In agricultural terms, fruit and vegetable production plays a prominent role. There is a weekly market on Saturday mornings.
