Fontvieille (also: Fontvieillo and Font-Vièio ) is a French commune with 3591 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region . It was created in 1790 by outsourcing from the neighboring municipality of Arles.
geography
The municipality is located to the left of the Rhône on the edge of the Alpilles mountain range , 8 km from the arrondissement capital of Arles to the southwest . It is part of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park .
history
The name of the place goes back to a water source in the southwest of the place. An offshoot of the Montmajour monastery has protected the spring. South of the village, on a small hill, stands the famous "Moulin d ' Alphonse Daudet " tower windmill (actually Moulin Ribet or Moulin Saint Pierre), where, according to legend, the writer lived for a while. In the basement ("sous-sol") of the mill, there is a small museum in a room that teaches about Alphonse Daudet. Daudet neither bought the mill nor lived in it. The information in his Lettres de mon moulin (French letters from my mill ) are fictitious. The mill was built in 1814 and operated until 1915. Three more tower windmills are in ruins in the area. It is not known which of the four mills is the actual Daudet mill. The municipality is known for its olive oil production .
