A stranger reckons is a film from 1974, based on the 26th Agatha Christie book " And then there was no more ". This film is the third adaptation of the Agatha Christie book. Earlier film adaptations are the films “ The Last Weekend ” (1945) and the film “ Secret in the Blue Castle ” (1965). The German television title of the film, which premiered on September 24, 1974, was "Ten Little Niggers".

action

Invited by a mysterious stranger under various pretexts, ten people reach an isolated location in the Iranian desert, more than 200 miles from the nearest city and without any connection to the outside world. After their arrival, the guests do not meet the landlord, but hear his voice, who accuses everyone of an unpunished crime for which his life must now be paid for. One death sentence after another is carried out with unpleasant regularity; every murder is announced by a nursery rhyme and symbolized by a broken porcelain figure. Michel Raven, a French singer, and the maid Else are the first victims. In an atmosphere of increasingly clear mutual distrust, Wilhelm Blore identifies himself as a private detective; General Salvé is found stabbed to death. Arthur Cannon, a judge, suspects the stranger among the invitees. Otto Martino dies of thirst while trying to escape in the desert. Other victims include actress Ilona Morgan, who was killed by a snake, the shot judge Cannon and Dr. Armstrong, who dies while being found. The last remaining guests Vera Clyde and Hugh Lombard did not themselves commit the crimes they were accused of. You can use a trick to expose the identity of the inviter and the murderer.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged, “The staging, which is too focused on superficial effects, only impresses with its acting. Otherwise the macabre game about the guilt and atonement of ten people lacks any atmosphere and psychological density. "

Remarks

The film's soundtrack is available on CD.

The plot of the film is based on the novel by Agatha Christie. However, the ending of the film is different; The location in the film also differs from the deserted island of the book:

Location of the film: The Abbasi Hotel

The hotel complex shown in the film is that of the Shah Abbas Hotel (today: Abbasi Hotel) in the Iranian city of Isfahan .

The name of the invitee is in the original version UN Owen , a homonym for "Unknown" (= "Unknown").

In the Spanish version there is a parallel plot with, among others, Rik Battaglia, which shows an investigation in an oriental city. Since the opening scene shows all the people getting into the helicopter that will take them to the desert hotel, these additional scenes were not re-shot, but instead were produced during the actual filming.
