Alberto de Mendoza (1969)

Alberto Manuel Rodríguez Gallego González de Mendoza (born January 21, 1923 in Buenos Aires , † December 12, 2011 in Madrid ) was an Argentine - Spanish actor and one of the most popular stars of Spanish-language cinema for over half a century.

Life

De Mendoza was born to Spanish parents in Buenos Aires, but came to his ancestral land at the age of two. When the civil war broke out in 1936, he returned to Argentina. There he went to cabaret as a dancer at the age of 15. A tour later took him to New York , but his dance partner left him there. The Argentine embassy, from which Mendoza hoped to get the money for the journey home, arranged for him to work with the Joos ballet troupe on site.

Back in Buenos Aires, he made a career change to acting and joined the stage troupes of Tira Merello and Mecha Ortiz. Alberto de Mendoza initially worked in the evening as an extra at the theater, while during the day he earned his living as a sports teacher.

In 1948 he got the main role in the play ' Filomena Marturano ', with which he suddenly became famous and which he played en suite for two years. At the same time, Mendoza, who had already been in front of the camera as a teenager, regularly accepted film offers, mainly melodramas and noble schnulzers; first in Argentina, later also in Mexico. He then returned to theater and took on leading roles in both modern plays (' Endstation Sehnsucht ') and in literary classics (' Anna Karenina ').

In 1959 he temporarily ended his Argentine career at the side of the young German star Susanne Cramer with the Argentine-German colportage " I want to live with you ". The film is a badly constructed robber's pistol around a suicidal couple who are denied marriage, a bag of money that is thrown by a person who was shot and a kidnapped, small child who is to be saved with this money from the hands of gangsters.

In 1960 de Mendoza moved to Europe. Since then, the attractive Argentine has mainly been active in European studios. De Mendoza appeared in routine action strips and westerns, melodramas and romantic comedies, agent and gangster stories, adventure and horror films. He played adventurer and gallant with Latin lover charm, as in the German-Spanish production An almost decent girl , where he attracted Liselotte Pulver , as well as officers, detective agents and Westerners. More rarely, he embodied completely opposite or even absurd types such as the Rasputin-like, Satan-worshiping Russian monk Pujardow in the horror spectacle Horror Express , in which Telly Savalas was his film partner.

After his roles became smaller and the films more and more insignificant, Alberto de Mendoza returned home to Argentina in 1980. There he received leading character roles in dramatic cinema material, but mainly played theater again, for example in autumn 1995 with great success the 'Don Fausto' ( Faust ) at the ' Teatro Municipal Presidente Alvear ' in Buenos Aires. Two years earlier he could be seen in an episode of the German television series " Flash - der Fotoreporter ".
