action
The Dummurrier's marriage is broken and Susan Dumurrier, wife of doctor and clinic owner Dr. George Dumurrier is bitter about her husband's constant affairs. When her husband meets his lover Jane again, the severely asthmatic wife suddenly dies and George is the beneficiary of a high-quality life insurance that his wife had taken out without his knowledge. The unexpected windfall comes in handy because his private clinic, which he runs with his brother Henry, is in financial difficulties. When the insurance company suspects fraud, the police have Susan's body exhumed and it turns out that the deceased has been poisoned and George is suspected of murder.
Meanwhile, he visits a nightclub with his lover Jane and unexpectedly meets the dancer Monica Weston, who looks very similar to his deceased wife. Now he starts an affair with Monica. Together with Jane, he searches for clues about the death of his wife and becomes more and more entangled in the suspicion of murder. A comparison of the fonts between Susan's and Monica's handwriting shows, however, unusual similarities.
Ultimately, the police investigations lead to his arrest, he is tried and sentenced to death in the gas chamber. While still on death row, he maintains the hope that evidence of his innocence will still be found.
