John Ireland (actor)
John Benjamin Ireland (born January 30, 1914 in Vancouver , British Columbia , † March 21, 1992 in Santa Barbara , California ) was a Canadian theater and film actor and director .
Life
Ireland grew up in New York , where he appeared on the theater stage (including in several Shakespeare productions) and on Broadway in the late 1930s . In the mid-1940s, the tall and slender former swimmer began filming in Hollywood . After his debut in A Walk in the Sun (1945) he played, among others, a villain in Fist Law of the Prairie by John Ford and the ranch worker Cherry Valance in Red River by Howard Hawks . For his part in The Man Who Wanted to Rule, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In addition to other Hollywood films, Ireland also starred in numerous television series such as The Little Vagabond , and Bonanza , and occasionally directed. In 1959 he took over the male part in Judy Garland's concept album The Letter , released by Capitol Records , a suite composed and arranged by Gordon Jenkins for orchestra, choir and soloists around a pair of lovers at the end of their relationship. From 1960 to 1962 he played a leading role in the British television series The Cheaters. Afterwards he was often seen in series as a guest star. From 1967 he shifted the focus of his cinema work to Europe, especially to Italy , where he was seen in many genre films, including a number of spaghetti westerns . He kept coming back to the stage for plays. In the 1950s he was twice co-director of films in which he played himself.
Ireland, whose name was mentioned repeatedly in connection with very young starlets, was married three times. He died of leukemia in 1992 .
